Thirteen years ago, in the town of Narriss on the Atremm Province trade circuit, two almost-teenagers had exactly one priority: getting to the front of the crowd at the best festival of the year. Alexx had been ready for an hour. Nic had spent that hour making him wait.

What happened next — a voice under a curtain, a flag where a curtain should have been, three words that hit harder than a rig under a truck — is a story Alexx has never quite figured out how to tell.
